Position Summary:

The Human Resources Advisor serves Russel Metals' business units, in a manner consistent with our decentralized and entrepreneurial culture, to facilitate and support all human resource related functions by minimizing the administrative burden on the field in handling and supporting the business units with their employee & labour relations, disability management, benefit administration, recruitment and through administering the human resources management system.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Coordinate and support the recruitment and selection process to successfully fill any job vacancies with qualified candidates in close consultation with the applicable business unit manager. 
    • This includes: preparing job postings; screening applicants; interviewing candidates; arranging any required testing; sharing your insights and assessments of candidates with our business unit managers; completing reference verification; and preparing offer letters.
  • Serve as human resources subject matter expert to provide skilled advice and support to our business unit managers in respect of employee and labour relations matters and on applicable employment and labour legislation and policies.
    • This includes: advising business unit managers with respect to our obligations at law, collective agreements or internal policies with respect to accommodation, termination and discipline of employees; preparing letters of discipline and termination; establishing work share programs; updating collective agreements including pay scales to accurately reflect any changes to collective agreements; providing reports on our employee group that enable business unit managers to make informed decisions.
  • Serve as company's primary point of contact with disability benefit program providers to ensure that claims are handled in a timely and professional basis, to ensure that employees are able to return to work as soon as practicable and to safeguard that spurious claims are discovered so as to mitigate the premium impact to the company and its employees.
    • This includes: ensuring all necessary disability forms and paperwork have been received; calculating the employees disability entitlement and providing the information to payroll; remaining in constant communication with the business unit manager and the employee as to developments and expected return to work; managing changes from STD to LTD; verifying that claims are up to date and amounts are accurate; and working with disability carrier to ensure employee is following treatment plan and complying with the requirements of the medical professional.
  • Manage the enrollment process and subsequent changes with respect to our group benefits programs to ensure information is accurate, complete and employees understand their benefits and are receiving the group benefits provided.
    • This includes: preparing new hire package containing all required forms; setting up opt-in benefits such as voluntary life insurance, AD&D coverage and VSP or additional DCPP contributions; managing paperwork to reflect any change in status such as single to family coverage and upon termination or death of beneficiary.
  • Serve as the owner of event forms and human resources management system to minimize the administrative burden on the field and business unit managers. 
    • This includes: managing the event form process and ensuring all required changes are made in the human resources management system for new hires, terminations, retirements, status changes, salary increases and position changes; using the human resources management system to manage annual vacation entitlement and providing such information to managers; and performing audits to ensure information is accurate.
  • Provide timely and accurate advice and counsel to employees in respect of human resources matters and benefit inquiries.
    • This includes: serving as a resource to our employee group to educate and advise them on their benefit entitlements; providing guidance and interpretation on applicable policies; and assisting with any requests for accommodation or assistance.
  • Participate in the development and review of human resources policies, programs and practices as may be necessary from time to time and which are consistent with our culture.

Required Skillset and Characteristics:

  • Relationship Builder: Able to develop and build relationships with business unit leaders and managers so the field seeks out the Human Resources Advisor for their input and views their advice as a value-added asset in their decision-making process.
  • Effective Communicator: Simple, clear and concise information is what is required.  Able to adapt to effectively convey key messages, in writing or verbally, to the targeted audience so that the advice and message is understood.  It is better to pick up the phone and engage directly with our managers than engage in lengthy email exchanges.
  • Understanding of Russel: Have a good understanding of our company objectives, operations and culture.  Appreciate the importance of our decentralized operating structure and human resources role as advisors who serve our business units.
  • Organizational Skills: As a significant component of the role is to alleviate administrative burdens on the field, must be organized and efficient and manage administrative processes effectively on behalf of the field.  Able to prioritize and execute amongst competing demands.
  • Attention to Detail:  Able to achieve thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task.  Business units specialize in buying and selling steel, it is our role to minimize paperwork and ensure that all forms are accurate and assist the business units with their timely completion.

Education and Experience:

  • University degree and/or BA in Human Relations, Organizational Behaviour or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience as an HR generalist.
  • CHRP designation would be an asset.

Salary Range: $55000 - $70000 / year
