Russel Metals is seeking a proactive and safety-focused individual for the role of Flat Bed Logistics Supervisor at our Cambridge, ON branch. This position offers an opportunity to manage a dynamic team, ensuring efficient operations while maintaining compliance with Ontario regulations.

Logistics responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain models for evaluating logistics programs to optimize the use of delivery trucks and reduce reliance on outside carriers.
  • Establish policies and standards for safe and organized transportation of steel products to customers.
  • Plan, organize, and direct daily logistics operations, including dispatching of vehicles and managing transportation schedules.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance and annual safety checks for trucks and trailers, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Keep transportation and driver files organized and in compliance with company policies and MTO regulations.
  • Monitor GPS systems and electronic logs, adjusting data as necessary and ensuring fleet compliance with MTO regulations.
  • Review SmartDrive incident reports, coach drivers as needed, and dispute incidents when required.
  • Dispatch and coordinate repair services for fleet equipment on the road, including tire service and heavy towing when necessary.
  • Monitor and report on department performance, recommending changes to schedules and policies as needed.
  • Negotiate services and preferential carrier rates to optimize logistics efficiency.
  • Build strong relationships with suppliers, contractors, and carriers to ensure timely and cost-effective service delivery.
  • Manage and monitor logistics key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure the fleet and drivers are operating efficiently and within company expectations.
  • Ensure safety training requirements for drivers are met and completed on schedule.
  • Oversee the procurement of logistics-related supplies such as fuel, hardware, truck wash, and securement materials.
  • Assist the Director, Fleet Safety and Compliance with Regional aspects of trucking as required.
  • Contribute to a safe, positive, and productive work environment.
  • Foster creative problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Shipping responsibilities include:

  • Oversee daily shipping activities to ensure the highest level of customer service and meet department targets.
  • Adjust shift structures and workloads within the shipping department to align with business needs.
  • Approve and track shipping department vacation requests and communicate information with payroll.
  • Monitor attendance, conduct coaching, and administer discipline as needed for shipping personnel and drivers.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in logistics and shipping, preferably in a service center environment (steel industry is a strong asset).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of Ontario regulations, the Highway Traffic Act, and CVOR compliance requirements.
  • Management Skills: Proven ability to manage and lead a team of 20-25 employees, with experience in coaching, performance management, and fostering a positive work environment. Managing unionized employees a strong asset.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with staff, vendors, customers, and management.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to address and resolve issues efficiently, with a focus on creative problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Familiarity with ERP and trucking software, SmartDrive, and Geotab systems.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong time management, organizational skills, and the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Safety Knowledge: Knowledge of safety regulations and requirements for drivers, with experience in overseeing safety training programs.
  • Negotiation Skills: Ability to negotiate carrier rates and logistics services to achieve cost-effective solutions.
  • Record-Keeping: Ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of fleet operations, maintenance, and driver files, in compliance with company policies and MTO requirements.
  • Vendor & Supplier Relations: Experience in building and maintaining relationships with external vendors, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Availability: Flexibility to handle on-call duties for emergencies, including equipment repairs and fleet coordination.
